MARION, Ind. (WPTA) - An investigation is underway after Marion fire crews pulled a girl from a burning home early Thursday morning.

The City of Marion Fire Department says crews were called to 612 West 2nd Street for a house fire where a child was trapped on the second floor.

Before fire crews arrived, officers from the Marion Police Department and the Grant County Sheriff’s Department tried to rescue a girl inside, but say they were forced to exit the home because of heavy smoke and heat. They say one adult, two kids, and several family pets were inside at the time of the fire.

When firefighters arrived, they say they found a boy on the roof of the home telling them that his sister was still inside. Fire crews say they quickly got a ladder and got the boy to safety as they began to search for the girl. They say they found the girl unresponsive in her bedroom and were able to get her down to medics.

The department says the girl was airlifted to Riley Children’s Hospital for treatment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.
