NAPPANEE, Ind. (WPTA) - Four people including U.S. Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) have died in a crash in Elkhart County.

The two-vehicle crash happened at 12:32 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of SR 19 and SR 119, Elkhart County police say. Three people in an SUV were killed in the crash, including 58-year-old Rep. Walorski, 27-year-old Zachery Potts, and 28-year-old Emma Thomson. Potts and Thomson worked as staff members for Walorski.

The sole occupant of the other vehicle involved in the crash was also pronounced dead at the scene. She has been identified as 56-year-old Edith Schmucker of Nappanee. Police say she traveled left of center and collided head-on with the SUV.

Walorski was first elected to represent Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District in 2012. She served on the House Ways and Means Committee and served three terms in the state’s legislature. Walorski was born in South Bend and lived near Elkhart, Indiana. The Associated Press reports that she and her husband were previously missionaries in Romania, where they established a foundation that provided food and medical supplies to impoverished children. She worked as a television news reporter in South Bend before her turn to politics.

“Jackie’s husband was just informed by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s office that Jackie was killed in a car accident this afternoon. She has returned home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers. We will have no further comment at this time,” her office said in a statement.

Gov. Eric J. Holcomb has directed flags in the state to be flown at half-staff in Walorski’s honor.
