FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - The Allen County Sheriff’s Department says it is investigating a fatal crash Friday morning.

Police say they were called just before 5 a.m. to SR 37, west of North County Line Road, on reports of a crash. When they arrived, they say they found the driver of an SUV was traveling north on SR 37 when it drove off the road and hit an embankment, sending it airborne.

When the SUV landed, officers say it caught on fire. They say the driver was able to exit the SUV and was taken to the hospital with severe injuries. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The area is currently closed in both directions as crews clean up the crash.
