FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A storm quickly gained strength and hit the city with punishing winds, hail and lightning. Indiana Michigan Power reported nearly 14,000 customers without power as of 10:0 p.m. Some roads were reported to be impassable because of downed trees or power lines.

Firefighters and police were inundated with calls as the storm tore through. Trees were reported felled on homes and cars, reminiscent of the damage left by a derecho that blew through Fort Wayne in June. Some neighborhoods reported waist-deep water with firefighters checking stranded cars for anybody in need of rescue.

Police issued a warning to drivers to avoid water-covered streets.
