FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A Michigan air show celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the U.S. Air Force took a tragic turn.

According to organizers, thousands had turned out for the Field of Flight in Battle Creek and witnessed a fiery crash. A shockwave jet truck that was racing two airplanes at 300 miles per hour, suddenly burst into flames.

Unfortunately, the shockwave jet truck’s driver, 40-year-old Chris Darnell was killed in the incident. The Battle Creek Police and Fire departments are joining the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating what went wrong. The city of Battle Creek halted the rest of Saturday’s air show performances following the tragedy.

Organizers say the show will resume Sunday at Battle Creek’s executive airport known as Kellogg Field.
