WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) - State environmental experts are conducting tests on fish and water samples collected from Look Lake -- in Whitley and Noble counties -- after the death of thousands of fish there.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said the fish kill has affected crappies and was noticed earlier this week.

Samples provided on Wednesday to the Animal Disease and Diagnostic Laboratory at Purdue University are being analyzed, but results are not expected for several weeks.

“Because no significant numbers of other dead small fish species have been observed, the cause is not believed to be the result of a toxic event such as a chemical spill or release,” the DNR said in a statement on the incidence. Officials will continue to monitor the situation.
