Fox Island still cleaning up after derecho
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Extensive damage was reported across southern Allen county from June 13th’s derecho. One spot with major damage--Fox Island County Park.
The park will be closed for several weeks while crews assess and clean up the damage.
County park superintendent Jeff Baxter says the damage the park sustained was worse than during the 2012 derecho. He estimates around a thousand trees are down. So many trees have fallen that some parts of the forest may be seeing daylight for the first time in around a hundred years.
There are many areas of the park crews haven’t even touched. The cleanup will take a long time, and that could have a major impact on the park’s bottom line. Fox Island only receives tax dollars for salaries, and all other costs are paid for with entry fees.
No one at Fox Island was hurt during the storm, and Baxter wants to keep it that way, making the decision to close the park until further notice. Baxter estimates Fox Island may not reopen until mid-July.
