FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - School board members approved the hiring of Wayne Barker as the district’s new superintendent. Barker will take over after the early retirement of Chris Himsel on July 1.

Barker was a teacher and coach at Carroll High School from 1989 to 1994.

“I feel privileged to come full circle by returning to NACS as superintendent,” Barker said. “My intention is to build on the many strengths we already have including strong curriculum, extracurricular/co-curricular activities and athletics. Each of these strengths nurture the talents and passions of our students thanks to the expertise of our teachers and caring support staff. I’m eager to begin my next chapter with NACS,” Barker said in a statement to media.

The veteran educator has also served as superintendent of Bluffton-Harrison Metropolitan Schools and most recently worked as the school superintendent in Mishawaka.

Barker joins the district during a difficult time for school administrators, with politically active parents increasingly pressuring school leaders to indulge their inclinations.
