FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - The Fort Wayne TinCaps are extending their condolences after they say former Fort Wayne Daisy player, Isabel “Lefty” Álvarez, passed away.
The sad announcement comes just weeks after Isabel and other former Daisy players were honored during the Daisies Throwback Night at a TinCaps game.
“Isabel was a lefty pitcher and outfielder, who besides the Daisies, also played for the Grand Rapids Chicks, Chicago Colleens, Battle Creek Bells, and Kalamazoo Lassies,” TinCaps Broadcasting Manager John Nolan said when introducing Isabel during the throwback night. “Originally from Cuba, Isabel has wound up making Fort Wayne her longtime home in the Waynedale neighborhood. Following her time on the diamond, Isabel worked at GE for more than 30 years.”
From 1945 to 1954, the Daisies represented Fort Wayne in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). Isabel was on the team in 1951 and 1954, Nolans says. She was born on October 31, 1933.
