SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Officials say two people are dead and five others were taken to the hospital after a crash on the Indiana Toll Road involving five cars and one semi.

Four of those patients are on advanced life care, while one is on basic life care.

It happened around 3 p.m. on Wednesday in the area of mile marker 71.

Indiana State Police say there was slowed traffic due to a work site and the semi failed to slow down and ran into the vehicles.

One of those vehicles caught on fire and was badly burned.

The driver in that vehicle died on scene.

Someone in another vehicle also died on scene.

“As a society we are losing the value of life. Life is very precious and very important...Whenever we are at scenes like this, even if somebody isn’t one of the fatalities, they are survivors that have to deal with this in their own ways to and hopefully they can deal with it in a healthy manner and move on...We are deep into construction season. We are going to see them throughout the summer and probably into the fall. The time to get ready for that is past...We need to be in that mode of driving, expecting to come up on these work sites and drive accordingly and be aware of everything,” said Sergeant Ted Bohner with Indiana State Police.

Westbound traffic was being diverted at exit 72. Eastbound traffic was being diverted at exit 49. All lanes were reopened around 8:30 p.m.
