DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) - The four people who burglarized a man’s home in DeKalb County Sunday, resulting in the homeowner fatally shooting two of them, were at the man’s house stealing cash just the day before, documents say.

Court documents say the homeowner was asleep inside his home in the 1600 block of State Road 8 just outside of Auburn on May 15. The man told police he woke up to his dog barking and saw three people in his home, later identified as 42-year-old Tabitha L. Johnson, Dylan Morefield, and another unidentified woman. He said Dylan and the unidentified woman threatened him and at times both held a gun to his head. He said the three were stealing items from his home and demanded money, saying he told them they had taken all of his money the day before. He told police they then had him write a check with no name on it for $500.

He said it was still dark in the early morning hours but he was able to get his shotgun. He said it was dark so he shot Dylan and the third woman, who was later identified as Rameica Moore. Both died from their injuries, according to the coroner.

The homeowner said he escorted Tabitha out of the home and found another man, 42-year-old Shaun T. Kruse, outside of the home. He said he held the two remaining burglars at gunpoint and told Shaun to call 911, saying his home phone was destroyed and his cell phones were stolen before he could call for help.

Court documents say the homeowner then told police that on May 14, the same four people came to his home aggressively demanding money. He said Tabitha had been messaging about needing $3,000 because “some bad people thought she had stolen it from them”. He said she occasionally stayed with him over the past 10 years. The man told police he only had $65 on him that day, and they took all of the cash. He said they wanted him to go to the bank and get money while threatening him, but his bank was closed that day so they left.

Shaun Kruse admitted to police that he had driven himself, Tabitha, Dylan, and Rameica to the man’s home on May 14, documents say. He said while they were there, Dylan and Rameica had a confrontation with the homeowner in an attempt to get money from him. He claimed Dylan was the aggressor when they demanded $65 from the man. Shaun said later that day, all four got together and spoke about going back to the man’s house to get more money and take his car and other belongings.

Kruse then told police that on May 15, all four of them went back to the same home and Dylan was “talking about being gangster over and over”. Kruse said he was told to get in the driver’s seat of the car as the others went inside the home. He said the three started bringing stolen items out to the car, and shortly after, the homeowner came out with a shotgun and told Kruse to call 911. Police say Tabitha admitted to being at the home on both days, saying she was trying to get her items from the home.

Both Shaun Kruse and Tabitha Johnson are charged with two counts of murder and burglary with a deadly weapon.
