FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - Adams Elementary’s end of school year celebration looked a little different than their annual carnival. Friday, the school held their first ever “Community Showcase”. The goal? To highlight student diversity and culture. “We have lots of different ethnic backgrounds in this area and this community,” administrative assistant Misty Zent told us. “We’re a neighborhood school also, and our families — we just wanted to make them feel celebrated.”

On the playground, kids could participate in face painting, a cake pop walk, and bouncy houses. The parking lot was transformed to an eating area, with several food trucks to choose from. Inside, there were dozens of vendors, educational resources, and tables offering samplings of food from countries like Mexico and Myanmar.

Kids sang songs for parents, while an African drummer showed families how to play. “We’re doing this event because everyone’s culture is different, and special in its own unique way,” third grader Aaliyah Underwood said. She, and her friend Blair Marsden, not only took part in the fun, but also played a key role in working the event. Marsden shared similar thoughts, “Everybody’s community is unique, and it’s different. Everybody’s culture — no matter what you speak — you don’t have to speak English to fit in with all of us!”

On display for attendees, was students’ art and projects from throughout the year. There was even a hands-on petting zoo with small mammals and a lizard. “I think at this point, that’s our main goal,” Zent explained, “to build healthy relationships in this community, because the community, is who’s going to school here.”

Organizers say the “Community Showcase”, which ran from 5-7 p.m, was the biggest event they’ve hosted. Adams Elementary is part of Fort Wayne Community Schools.
