FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Even as several new projects rise nearby, the downtown Fort Wayne skyline is losing a longtime presence as the walls come down on St. Joe Hospital.

The facility that served as the staple of health care in the central part of the city closed last year -- a move that coincided with the opening of the new Lutheran Downtown Hospital just across the street. Within a few months, work began in earnest on the demolition of St. Joe.

Lately, heavy equipment has begun ripping down large segments of the facade, exposing the gutted core of the building. Officials tell ABC21 work is expected to continue into early 2023, when the land will be completely cleared. It will then serve as parking and “green space,” Lutheran Health Network said.

Some auxiliary medical buildings adjacent to the main St. Joe will remain in use.
