FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - ABC21 will host a debate between the two candidates seeking the Republican nomination for Sheriff of Allen County as part of a special edition of “Political Radar” this month, station officials announced.

The broadcast is scheduled to air at 7:30 p.m. on April 19 – two weeks before voting concludes on May 3.

News anchor Brien McElhatten will moderate the debate, which is expected to focus on issues including drug addiction, law enforcement-community relations and a recent federal court ruling addressing substandard conditions at the Allen County jail. The latter topic has been thrust to the forefront of the campaign; the next sheriff will be a key player in charting the future of the current facility and a possible replacement.

Troy Hershberger -- the chief deputy for outgoing Sheriff David Gladieux -- and Fort Wayne Police Capt. Mitch McKinney are on the Republican ballot and will participate in the debate. One Democrat qualified for the office. Fort Wayne Police Capt. Kevin Hunter is unopposed in the May primary election and he advances automatically to the general election in November. The Political Radar broadcast will feature a segment on his candidacy, as well.

The program will air unedited and with limited interruptions.
