ELKHART, Ind. (WPTA) - Indiana State Police (ISP) say they are investigating after an 18-year-old crashed into an Elkhart shop while fleeing a traffic stop early Monday morning.

A release sent by ISP says around 4 a.m., a trooper was trying to pull the vehicle over for several traffic violations just beyond the booth at the Indiana Toll Road Elkhart Exit near Cassopolis Street.

They say the driver fled southbound on Cassopolis Street but hit the concrete divider and lost control. The driver, identified as 18-year-old Maki Chandler, crashed into the front of a flower shop in the 1700 block of Cassopolis, causing extensive damage.

Chandler then ran off and tried to get into a passenger car but was taken into custody. He was arrested for resisting law enforcement and taken to the Elkhart County Jail. This is an ongoing investigation.
