FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Freezing drizzle Monday morning and throughout the afternoon created hazardous road conditions, making a busy day for state troopers.

Troopers from the Fort Wayne Post say from 7:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, they responded to 35 crashes due to winter weather. They say Allen and Huntington Counties were hit the hardest, with many crashes happening on I-69, I-469, US30, and US24 roadways.

In order to handle the high volume of crashes, police say they had to call out numerous off-duty troopers (road troopers, detectives, commercial motor vehicle troopers, and command personnel) to effectively handle all incidents.

Officers note that road conditions have improved due to “the tremendous effort by INDOT road crews working to get roadways salted/treated.” A winter weather advisory has been issued through 10 p.m. for the entire viewing area due to the freezing drizzle. See the latest weather update below:

Tune in tonight at 5 and 6 for the latest weather conditions in the area.
