Count on Konchar: Purdue Fort Wayne grad has standout night for Grizzlies
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WPTA) - The NBA got a bit more ‘Jitty’ on Thursday night.
‘Jitty,’ of course, is a nonsensical word made popular by Purdue Fort Wayne graduate John Konchar, but Konchar has taken a no-nonsense approach for the Memphis Grizzlies this season.
Konchar just had arguably the most impressive game of his professional career, coming off the bench for 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds in the Grizzlies’ 116-108 win over Minnesota. He even knocked down a key three-pointer with 1:02 left in the game to help seal the victory for Memphis.
Despite going undrafted in 2019, Konchar still made it onto NBA teams’ radars, thanks in part to his impressive three-point shooting abilities. Konchar has continued to improve from beyond the arc as he’s carved out a larger role in the Memphis rotation.
After Thursday’s game, Konchar’s three-point percentage sits at an unreal 49.0. He hasn’t played enough to qualify on the NBA leader board yet (Miami’s P.J. Tucker currently leads with a 46.6 percentage).
Konchar now plays alongside one of the brightest young stars in the NBA, likely All-Star Ja Morant. Morant has taken note of the deadpan, low-key approach to the sport that Konchar’s apparently carried over from his days at the Gates Center.
Konchar started a pair of games for the Grizzlies back in December, before he entered COVID-19 protcols and missed a couple weeks. If Konchar delivers more performances like the one on Thursday night, he may earn a much longer stay in that starting lineup.
