FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Two people are dead after a house fire on the city’s north side.

Crews first confirmed that one person had died and said they were searching for the second victim but had difficulty getting into the home safely. They later located the second victim and pronounced them dead at the scene.

First responders were called to the 7000 block of Strawberry Drive around 5:45 Tuesday morning. When they arrived on scene they found smoke and flames coming from the home.

Conditions at the time posed challenges for the firefighters.

“Weather definitely plays a factor because hoses freeze quickly and firefighters freeze quickly,” Deputy Chief Adam O’Connor told ABC21. “So they’re very cautious about warmed up before they get frost bite... but it is an issue this time of year.”

Investigators are working to determine the cause. The Allen County Coroner will release the names of the victims.

Two dogs in the home also died.
