FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - The Allen County Coroner’s Office says the man who traded gunfire with police on Saturday died by suicide.

Police were called to the 10500 block of Hickory Tree Road around 11:45 a.m. to reports of a domestic dispute inside a home, and when police arrived, the suspect fired a shot at officers. Officers say they shot back and then the man barricaded himself inside of the house. Officers eventually entered the house and found the man with a gunshot wound.

FWPD said in a release Monday afternoon that the officers who returned fire are Matthew Childs and Christopher Hawthorne. Childs had no entries on his disciplinary record, and Hawthorne had three allegations of police vehicle accidents.

The suspect has been identified by the coroner as 44-year-old Blake Stephen Parton of Fort Wayne. His manner of death was ruled a suicide. The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Indiana State Police, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
