NACS parents protest vaccine mandates; no such mandate currently on the table for the district
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A group of Northwest Allen County School parents held a protest Saturday morning outside of the Parkview Regional Medical Center campus.
Right now, there are no proposals to require vaccines at NACS, nor is there a requirement for Parkview Health employees.
“We are out here supporting our friends who may or may not have a voice in the medical freedom fight regarding whether want to be vaccinated or don’t want to be vaccinated. We’re not trying to tell people what to do,” said organizer and NACS parent Kristi Cortezano-Smith.
Many of the demonstrators held signs with messages saying they don’t want vaccine mandates in schools and businesses.
“It’s comforting to know we have support from other people in the community,” parent Rita Cox said.
These parents say it’s not about politics, but rather personal choice. Scientific studies have proven vaccines to be safe and effective. Health experts say vaccinations lessen your chance of getting a severe case of the virus, or even from dying from it.
“We’re getting high fives, we’re getting honks from police,” Cox said. “It feels good knowing that I have the freedom to stand outside and peacefully protest.”
As parents urge district leaders and businesses to not impose vaccine mandates, Cortezano-Smith says she’s willing to come to the table and talk with those who disagree.
“I would absolutely be willing to sit down and have a cup of coffee and you can tell me what you want me to know. and I’d be more than willing to share with you my opinion,” Cortezano-Smith said. “Hopefully we can come together, hug it out and have a great day.”
An official with NACS said they would not comment on this protest. An official with Parkview Health said they did not know about this protest and we’re waiting to hear back for further response.
Northwest Allen County Schools was one of two districts in Allen County to enact a mandatory mask policy this fall, which will expire later this month.
