Blood drive at fitness center raises awareness as longtime member needs organ transplant
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Employees and members of a Fort Wayne gym are asking for your help as one of its longtime members is in need of a kidney.
Mike Fransen was diagnosed with stage 5 Kidney Disease and has been a either a member or trainer at Spiece Fitness for more than 20 years.
The fitness center teamed up with the Red Cross for a blood drive Saturday afternoon. It comes as a time that the need for blood donations is high.
Fransen is currently on the organ transplant list and is waiting for a donor.
“It’s been kinda rough,” Fransen said. “I do dialysis three days a week and I’m in the chair for four hours and fifteen minutes. That’s taken away some of the things I’ve done before in my life. I’m fortunate that I can still work out. They let me do some light weight, but I’m fortunate enough to still have the Spiece family.”
Aleana Branigan works at Spiece Fitness and says she’s known Fransen for seven years.
“Mike is and has always been a part of the community,” Branigan said. “He’s been a 20 year member for us and we’ve watched him train people as well.”
Fransen wants everyone to remember to keep an eye on your health.
IU Health has more information on how you can become a donor.
