FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - The world has suffered more than 5 million deaths from COVID-19.

According to Medical News Today, the percentage of Americans with symptoms of clinical depression rose from 8.5 percent in 2017-2018 to 27.8 percent during the first year of the pandemic. Although we vaccines and precautions, many still struggle with getting back to normal.

That’s why it’s more important, now then ever, to give back and be thankful. At St. Mary’s Catholic Church, about 1,000 meals were handed out.

ABC21 spoke with some of the folks who waited in line to get the hot Thanksgiving meals.

“I’m very grateful for the place here (St. Mary’s) and grateful for the food. I’m grateful for the mission (Rescue Mission) that I stay at, I stay at the mission now. I’m grateful for all the programs that Fort Wayne has provided for this holiday season and all the help they’ve given everybody.” - Terry Poisso

“Life, breath, strength and just being able to be alive. So many people are at this time of year.” - Sallie Wacasey

“I’m thankful for being here. It starts with Jesus and I’m really thankful for Jesus first of all. I’m thankful for others, the people around me. This is my family. I’m thankful for that, and for being able to live the dream and live in my city.” - Alejandro Lopez

“This is a very important event, it’s Thanksgiving. I love the event and it is helping people. It’s sad because of corona you can’t sit down now, you just carry it out. But, I still appreciate everything that is happening.” - Reggie Holmes

Thanksgiving gives us all an opportunity to remember what really matters in our lives. Days like this (Thanksgiving) reminds folks that it’s a duty to help others. We spoke with some volunteers who say were humbled to be able to be apart of the meal giveaway.

“It helps us come together and remember people that are not here with us. This is something that we enjoy doing.” - Mike Strekcher
