ISP investigate Wabash officer-involved shooting
WABASH, Ind. (WPTA) - The Indiana State Police are investigating in Wabash after a police deputy shot and injured a man who they thought was holding a handgun.
The Wabash County Sheriff’s Department says they were trying to serve a warrant as part of a narcotics investigation around 8:30 Tuesday in the 300 block of West Maple Street.
They say officers say they announced that they were trying to serve a search warrant and before they entered the home, they say they saw a 51-year-old man with what appeared to be a handgun. Police say they ordered him to drop the gun but he didn’t comply so they fired multiple shots, hitting the man at least once.
They say the man is currently in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
Detectives say further investigation revealed that the gun the man was holding was a “realistic replica” airsoft handgun. They say there was no orange tip, and the muzzle has the same diameter and shape as a real handgun.
This is an ongoing investigation.
