Thief steals car with baby inside from downtown gas station
Baby found unharmed a short time later
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) -Two parents have been reunited with their baby after terrifying moments downtown.
A thief stole a Ford Fusion sedan from the Phillips 66 station at Washington and Broadway a little after 8:00 Monday evening. An 8-month-old child was in the back seat. His mother was nearby. In mere moments, the car was gone.
“Somebody stole our car and kidnapped our son,” said the boy’s father who had just arrived after hearing what happened. He clutched a cigarette as he tried to calm his nerves. If my kid is hurt, whoever did it is dead,” he told our reporter.
While the parents were contemplating what had happened, police were fanning out to find the car. State police were called in to assist.
Within 30 minutes police received a tip from employees at a gas station on Sherman Boulevard near West State. Someone had hastily placed a car seat carrying a baby on the ground near the building. The suspect ran.
Minutes later, the parents were reunited with their baby son. He was unharmed. The thief and the car were still missing. At the time this article was published, police were still looking for them.
Medics checked out the baby before releasing him to his parents.
