Auto experts warn of preventable car issues during winter months
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Experts are warning us all to get our cars ready for this winter following Fort Wayne’s first snowfall of the winter season.
“A lot of people are being patient,” Rich’s Auto Center Owner Nick Brown said. “We go by a schedule and we’re scheduling about a week out.”
This time of year is really busy for Brown and his workers. He says there are so many things that you can do right now to get your car ready. These are tips that will prevent issues that could take years off of the life of your car.
“They do come up pretty quick with a rapid change in temperature and they take a toll on your battery,” Brown said. “We’ll have some no start issues, but people wait a lot of times until those problems happen.”
Brown says that many of the issues have to do with the engine.
“It’s important to have your heating and air conditioning looked at,” Brown said. “A cabin filter can be clogged up and cause low flow out of your heat vent, that can cause a lack of clearing your windshield for the defrost. It’s proper to have all of your fluids stocked up, my technicians use this to top off your washer fluid and your coolant.”
He says a big piece of the puzzle is making sure your car warms up before you leave.
“When it’s cold out, that engine has to work a little harder,” Brown said. “It’s just better to have that vehicle warmed up and ready to go before you operate it.”
What about your tires? Brown says it’s pretty easy to see if they’re ready for the snow.
“You can tell if the tire has plenty of tread left to get you through the winter,” Brown said.
As we prepare for another winter, Brown says his team will be ready if you have issues with you car.
Officials with the Fort Wayne Street Department and the Indiana Department of Transportation say they’ll be ready for when more snow falls.
