FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - You can get a look inside of the new Lutheran Downtown Hospital on Saturday, one week before it opens replacing the old St. Joseph Hospital in downtown Fort Wayne.

St. Joe Hospital opened in 1869 and people who live and work in the area say they have strong memories.

Sharon Scrogham is the owner of Sharon’s Victorian House of Gifts, which is just down the street from St. Joe.

“I’m happy because that means a new hospital, new equipment, new staff and hopefully they’re as nice as the ones that are leaving,” Scrogham said.

Scrogham’s knowledge of the neighborhood extends well beyond the four walls of her store.

“We’re happy and sad,” Scrogham said. “I was born at St. Joe, I was born in ‘42 and I took my children there for various things.”

Lutheran Downtown will replace St. Joseph Hospital, which will be torn down sometime in 2022. Officials with Lutheran said the new hospital will have a layout that will make it easier to care for patients.

“It’s there,” Robert Denyse said. “I’m excited from the sense that hopefully I won’t have to use it, but it’s good for somebody.”

Neighbors have dealt with the noise of construction for a couple years. Denyse, who lives nearby, said it hasn’t impacted him that much.

“I know it was very disruptive for the people who have to live across the street from them,” Denyse said. “I know a lot of us were surprised they were going to build right there but I guess they didn’t have any alternatives.”

The open house for the new hospital is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
