FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - After eight months, a section of Bass Road between Hillegas and Thomas Roads should open by the middle of this week.

However, that doesn’t mean the end of problems for neighbors.

George Gordon said he has seen more traffic going through his subdivision near the closure.

“I’ll be glad to see it open,” Gordon said. “It hasn’t been horrible, just a lot of traffic.”

However, Gordon’s frustration with people driving through his neighborhood may seem like nothing compared to the problems at Richlene Kennels.

“It is a struggle,” Owner Beth Buckler said. “One day there were trains on Thomas, it was our only way in here and everything else was closed. No employees could get here, I had customers trying to get in here so my phone was ringing off the hook and I had nobody here to work.”

Buckler said traffic getting to the kennel has been really bad. So much so, her customers don’t even know where to go.

“We have to stay on the phone with half of them and just walk them through it because they end up using their GPS and they end up in the neighborhood next door,” Buckler said. “Then we have to coach them through it on how to exactly get here depending on which road is open for the day.”

When the stretch of Bass Road between Hillegas and Thomas reopens, you’ll find a new center turn lane, a roundabout and a storm sewer system.

Meanwhile, Buckler hopes this is all worth the wait.

“I think it looks awesome,” Buckler said. “I was excited when they were going to do this, Bass Road is busy so we definitely needed it.”

The next phase of the project is set to begin in the winter. It will bring a new bridge and will widen the road to allow better traffic flow.
