FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A father is pleading for action months after police say a mother gave his three children dangerous amounts of prescription pills.

The mother, Carolyn Corbin, 31, faces four felony child neglect charges and four felony drug possession charges.

The father, Kevin Welker, said his children are his world.

“I don’t understand how a parent can do that to a kid,” Welker said. “It rips my heart out.”

Court documents say Corbin and her husband, Ryan Wirgau, gave each of the kids 100 milligrams of Trazodone.

Welker said he has custody and that Corbin gets visitation for a week each month. Court documents say Corbin also gave Trazodone to a fourth child, who is her child but has a different father.

“I’ve got a son that is now 10 years old, soon to be 11,” Welker said. “That boy needs the positive in his life, just as well my daughters need the positive from their mother. They now have lost that and that hurts.”

Investigators with the Huntington Police Department were told by Child Services officials about the incident on July 28 of this year.

The three children were taken to the hospital showing symptoms of exhaustion, nausea and vomiting. All of them were hospitalized.

Officials with “Stop Child Abuse and Neglect” (SCAN) said this is a growing problem.

“Some parents think that if it makes them tired it’s going to make their child tired so I think that could be something that’s a concern,” SCAN Chief Operating Officer Trish Fox said.

Welker hopes justice can ultimately be served.

Corbin bonded out of jail and is expected to be in court on November 29.
