Fort Wayne veteran reunited with family after 9 months overseas
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A Fort Wayne veteran was reunited with his family Sunday afternoon during their weekly lunch outing.
Sgt. Sean Athy’s family gets lunch every Sunday at the Cosmos on Lima Road. However, Sgt. Athy hasn’t joined them for months, since he was overseas in Kuwait and Afghanistan.
“Just being there and supporting, doing a lot of refugee help and getting them stable with their families and reunited,” Sgt. Athy said. “Being part of that is just amazing.”
Sgt. Athy’s mother, Becky Rennacker, emailed our newsroom, thrilled that her son was returning from service.
“It seemed to take forever and then once the wheels were turning, it was a quick speed,” Rennacker said.
His wife, Kristin, has taken care of their four kids while he was gone.
“I can’t even describe it,” Kristin Athy said. “It’s so great to have him home.”
While Sgt. Athy returns to his life at home, he’s got a message for other military families in similar situations.
“Stay strong, stay positive, make sure every conversation you have is positive,” Sgt. Athy said. “Keep negativity out of it.”
Sgt. Athy said he’s home for good and will remain active until his retirement from the military in five years.
