DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) - Inside DeKalb High School, you’ll find siblings who have become stars when it comes to science.

Sydney and Matthias Hefty recently competed in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. Matthias’ presentation on a more cost effective way to feed goats landed him a fourth place award in the competition.

He’s been following in his older sister’s footsteps. The Heftys and one other DeKalb student were all finalists in the competition. It’s significant for a high school to have a single finalist, let alone three.

Participating in science fairs is a family affair, as the Heftys have been doing so from a young age. Their father was also a two-time finalist in the International Science and Engineering Fair.

Sydney and Matthias continue to support one another--there isn’t much in the way of sibling rivalry. They also are co-owners of their goat businesses, splitting tasks and chores between the two of them.

It’s safe to say you can expect more innovative Hefty sibling projects in the future.
