A Downtown Escape - ABC21: Your Weather Authority

A Downtown Escape

Posted: Updated:

We all know of the three rivers running through the heart of the city, but you may not be aware of all the summer activities they provide. The waterways are just waiting to be explored, as are the trails that line their shores. Not everyone has a canoe lying around in their garage though, but no worries. That's where Fort Wayne Outfitters come in.

"We offer kayak rentals, canoe rentals, stand-up paddle board rentals, and we offer them here at our location and you can go out, explore the rivers and come back to the spot," says Cara Hall, one of the owners of Fort Wayne Outfitters and Bike Depot.

The serene waters offer a perfect outlet for enjoying a lazy summer afternoon. It's even more fun when you bring along friends, or your furry companion, assuming they cooperate. Speaking of socializing, Fort Wayne Outfitters host a handful of paddle socials, their most popular being Margarita Mondays.

"Everyone goes out as a group, hangs out together, and then at the end of the trip they go out for margaritas together. So it's a very social, fun activity," says Hall.

Let's not forget about the Rivergreenway. The paths are ideal for biking, and Fort Wayne Outfitters can assist you there too. They'll get your bike up and running with a full service repair shop, and if you don't own a bike, feel free to rent one.

"People that are coming into town, don't have their bike with them, they can rent a bike. We'll get them all fitted, we can get trailers for little kids. Give them a map with all the trails on there, and send them on their way."

If you've never been in a kayak or canoe before, don't let that deter you. The rivers are for beginners and enthusiasts alike.

"The people that go out for the first time, they come back and tell me 'It was so amazing, and I never knew our rivers could be so cool,' and they see the city from a new perspective and it gets them really excited about what a great opportunity we have to develop them further and take advantage of those."
