Verona's Luehring announces transfer to Wisconsin

VERONA (WKOW) -

For Verona High School graduate Alex Luehring, the idea of playing basketball at home recently took on a whole new meaning.

"It was probably the hardest decision I've ever had to make in my life."

Luehring had just completed her first year at Green Bay when she made the decision to transfer to Wisconsin to be closer to her father, who is battling stage four cancer.

"He was all over the place with his thoughts as well, but it was very important for him as well to at least try to make it work at Green Bay. He doesn't want his cancer to effect me in any way, which is something that I give him a lot of credit for."

In high school, Luehring helped lead the Wildcats to the state championship in 2016 as a junior. She followed that up with a big senior season before signing to play for the Phoenix. After spending her first season as a redshirt, she will continue her career closer to her dad in Madison.

"My dad has been my biggest fan ever since I was a little girl. I'm just so excited that he'll get the chance to watch me play here."

Even in these most difficult of times, Luehring and her family are looking forward to the future.

"He was the one who started taking me to Badgers games when I was five years old. I think it's going to be surreal for him if I ever make it onto the court. "
