FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA 21) -

Police are investigating after someone stole nearly $2,000 from a group in broad daylight.

The theft happened outside of Georges International Market on Sunday. The money was being raised to support efforts in Guatemala to rebuild following the Volcan De Fuego eruption.

Jaime Palma, an immigrant from Guatemala, gathered a group of people to raise money. The group spent days in the heat and rain, asking for donations. That money was lost when a man approached the group as if he was about to make a donation. He took off with about $2,000 in cash that he snatched from the group.

Surveillance video from a gas station across the street shows a man believed to be the suspect sprinting away from the scene. Palma said while he does not hold any resentment for the criminal, he hopes he has a change of heart and brings the money back.
