Possible Angola Tornado: Storm Spotter Perspective

Posted: Updated:
ANGOLA, Ind. (WPTA21) -

Tornado Warnings urgently call individuals to seek shelter, take cover, and find safety. Tonight, many Steuben County residents attested to witnessing the visual footprint of a tornado. But no Tornado Warning was issued. Did a tornado touch down this evening? I asked trained ABC21 Storm Spotter and Angola resident Michelle Baker about her perspective on a possible tornado touchdown.

Michelle described substantial damage indicative of strong winds. She witnessed downed limbs, torn roofs, ripped metal, and widespread debris. But does Michelle believe a tornado touched down? No. Though her account validates the damage reports from numerous individuals, she believes the storms simply delivered extreme winds.

Until the National Weather Service sends an official damage survey team, we will not know whether a tornado did or did not touch down this evening. The National Weather Service will coordinate with local EMA directors in the coming days. We will update you on the status of the storm survey as soon as information becomes available.
