Indiana State Police have identified two officers involved in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect earlier this week -- including the veteran deputy who was shot in both of his hands.
The incident happened in Garrett Tuesday night. ISP says DeKalb County Sheriff's Deputy Todd McCormick, 53, was the officer who was wounded in the hands. McCormick is 9-year veteran of the department.
The other law enforcement officer involved was identified as Garrett Police Officer Alicia Castro, 25, who joined the department four months ago.
McCormick is recovering from his injuries and Castro was not injured in the incident.
The suspect involved was critically wounded and remains hospitalized.
Initial reports indicated that the incident began as a traffic stop that was initiated by a Garrett police officer, now known to be Castro. Dep. McCormick arrived as backup and it was the deputy who exchanged gunfire with the suspect, an ISP spokesman said.
Both officers have now spoken with ISP investigators.
No additional information on the shooting was released on Friday. The investigation will be turned over to the DeKalb County Prosecutor’s Office upon completion.
