FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA 21) -

A Fort Wayne man faces a felony count of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious injury following the death Monday of a 2-month-old child.

Julio Carrillo was arrested and preliminarily charged with the level 3 felony.

Fort Wayne police began their investigation after receiving a report that an infant had been seriously injured at a home in the 100 block of Pontiac Street. The child later died.

The Allen County Coroner's Office is working to determine the cause of death, but court documents quote a doctor as saying the infant had multiple brain bleeds, a depressed skull fracture, bleeding tears to his rectum, and bruises covering his rear end.

Court documents say Carrillo told police he spanked the fussy infant then tripped and fell, causing the baby to hit his head on the floor.

Carrillo, who lives in the 200 block of West Pontiac Street, was booked into the Allen County Jail. Bond was set at $10,000.

His next court appearance is scheduled for March 16.
