Fort Wayne extended stay hotel homicide suspect appears in court

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA21) -

The man accused of killing his step-brother at a Fort Wayne extended stay hotel appeared in court Monday.

Joshua Mackin was in court Monday for his initial hearing. During Monday's court hearing, Mackin said he would hire his own attorney and asked for a speedy trial. He was informed he might not meet guidelines for a speedy trial. Instead, he asked for a public defender and withdrew the motion for a speedy trial.

Investigators say they think he's responsible for the shooting death of Samuel Westlake. Westlake was found dead in his jeep outside of a Fort Wayne motel on February 19th. A number of witnesses told police Mackin had anger towards Westlake because he slept with Mackin's girlfriend.

While walking out of court, Mackin said "justice for Sam. Not guilty. Justice for Sam." He also said "rest in peace bro." Mackin will be back in court on March 28 with his lawyer for a trial setting.
