One life was claimed in a crash between a semi and a passenger car carrying four people.
Police say the crash happened near the 50 mile marker in the westbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road, about one mile east of the LaPorte exit.
Indiana State Police Dispatch received a call of a crash between a semi and a passenger car around 7:13 this morning, Jan. 12.
Investigation revealed that a red 2013 Hyundai with three passengers, driven by 36-year-old Haifeng Yang, was traveling west when he lost control of the vehicle. Edward Gray, 54, was driving a black 2015 Freightliner westbound and hit the Hyundai on the right side, sending it into the north ditch.
The Freightliner stopped in the center median. Gray was uninjured in the crash.
Yang received serious injuries and was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. The front seat passenger of the car, 62-year-old Qinglian Li from Shanghai, China, had serious and life-threatening injuries. Li was taken to LaPorte Hospital and was then transferred to Christ Advocate Hospital in Chicago.
Another passenger, 63-year-old Jucai Li of Shanghai, was sitting in the right rear side of the Hyundai and was pronounced dead at the scene by the LaPorte County Coroner. A two-year-old riding in the left rear was securely fastened in a child seat and was uninjured.
This crash remains under investigation and alcohol or drugs are not suspected as factors in this crash. Family of Li have been notified.
