New charges have been filed against a Fort Wayne man accused of beating a 2-year old to death.
Mitchell Vanryn now faces a murder charge. That new charge was added Wednesday in connection with the death of Malakai Garrett.
Prosecutors say Vanryn showed up at a fire station last week with Malakai in his arms saying the child wasn't breathing. Police say Vanryn, who is the boyfriend of the child's mother, was watching the boy while the mother was at work.
Court documents detail evidence of severe internal and external injuries to Malakai. The doctor who conducted the autopsy told police the injuries were consistent with multiple blows and strikes from a closed-fist punch. The internal injuries would have had to occur within hours of arriving at the hospital.
The coroner has ruled Malakai's death a homicide.
According to court documents, Malakai's father filed a petition last month, weeks before Malakai died, asking for full custody. In the document, he claims his son's "safety and welfare" were in jeopardy, and the situation amounted to an emergency. Garrett says he feels the system failed his son.
A GoFundMe page has been started for funeral costs for Malakai.
