Smith-Green Community Schools hosts public forums to discuss financial issues

Posted: Updated:

The Smith-Green Community Schools district is holding a public forum to figure out what to do about the district's financial issues.

Superintendent Daniel Hile tells ABC when he first became superintendent a few months ago he hired a firm to do some research and look at options for the district financially. Now, they're trying to be as open and transparent as possible and present those numbers to the public.

Hile says they've floated out ideas for three different tax referendums, or the option to make huge budget cuts. This is something the district already did a few years back. The cuts would be more than $600,000 and would involve staff and cuts to athletics.

One parent tells ABC cutting athletics from this town would have huge negative impacts, so she says she suports the biggest tax increase.

Superintendent Hile says closing down the high school and bussing the kids to other area high schools is something they're not discussing right now and is the absolute worst case scenario.

He also said he will absolutely do anything to save the school, starting with these public forums. The second one will take place starting at 7 pm in the Churubusco Junior-Senior High School auditorium.
