Headwaters Park opens ice skating rink for 15th season

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA 21) -

A little bit of winter comes to Fort Wayne this weekend.

Saturday marks the opening day of Headwater Park’s outdoor ice skating rink. The rink is open seven days a week for three months during the winter season.

In 2016, skaters totaled just over 27,000, making a record for the park. There has been a cumulative total of nearly 312,000 visitors since the rink opened in November 2003. Geoff Paddock, Executive Director of the Headwaters Park Alliance says the steadfastness of the park adds an appeal to visitor.

“Thanks to Lincoln, and to the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, the Edward D. & Ione Auer Foundation and the PNC Trusts, skating rates have remained the same for 15 seasons,” Paddock said.

The rink is open from 1 to 8 pm Monday through Thursday, noon to 10 Friday, 11 to 10 on Saturday and noon to 8 on Sunday. The rink will be closed for Christmas, but have extended hours during the holidays.

Free parking is available in the Headwaters Park lot, with access from Clinton and Barr Streets. Prices are still $3 for children 13 and under and $5 for children 14 and over and adults. There is a $2 charge to rent skates, or patrons can bring their own skates.

Every Wednesday, between December 6 and February 28, will be a free skate day for children 13 and under. Season skating passes and single skating passes are available by calling Geoff Paddock at 425-5745. The direct line to the rink is 422-7625, beginning November 18.
