Students at Southwick Elementary School will experience a special fire drill during National Fire Prevention Week.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department said the school will act as the host school and central location for the 71st annual citywide fire drill Wednesday, October 11. During the drill, students will pull the fire alarm and evacuate as normal. What will be different, however, is special effects simulating a real fire. This includes non-toxic "smoke" and strobe lighting. Firefighters will respond to the school for the "fire".
Other schools across the city will also participate in the drill. Those schools will receive a fire alarm notification via WOWO. When they hear the broadcasted alarm they will also evacuate as normal. The department said schools throughout Fort Wayne and Allen county use this annual opportunity to engage in fire safety dialogue and training.
