Fort Wayne churches collecting donations for hurricane relief

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ABC 21) -- The Chapel of W Hamilton Road has been collecting donations for the last week, placing them in a semi truck that is leaving for Texas Tuesday.

The truck, donated by Bunn Trucking, is also a donation.

"Yeah, everything here is a donation. The people who've loaded the truck, the people who bought goods, the people who are taking it down -- it's just volunteers. It's Fort Wayne at its best," said Pastor Rick Hawks.

They've been collecting water, clothing and whatever else they can get.

Half of the trailer headed to Texas will contain 100 generators and hundreds oh chainsaws all donated by Jared Davis from ProMow.

"Today we were on the phone to our contacts in Texas and they said generators are one of the things they really need because they're trying to dry the houses out with mold but they don't have any power," said Pastor Hawks.

The Chapel is collaborating with Pathway, New Covenant, Blackhawk Baptist Church and Brookside Church.

They are collecting more donations the rest of this week and into the weekend and will send several trailers with supplies to Florida next week.

"This is a crisis of proportions we've not experienced in my lifetime and it's going to take months just to get dried out. It's going to take years to rebuild and we have to be committed to helping for the long haul. Not just when it's in the news," said Pastor Hawks.
