A Fort Wayne woman is now facing several charges after causing a boat to violently spin out of control at Lake Gage over the weekend.
The dramatic video shows the boat going in circles at a high rate of speed after everyone on board fell out, leaving 4 of them seriously injured.
The young woman, 20-year-old Domonique Effinger of Fort Wayne, was arrested for boating while intoxicated causing injury, and being a minor in possession of alcohol. The Steuben County jail says Effinger has posted bond since.
Department of Natural Resources officers say Effinger took a sharp turn with the boat on Lake Gage Saturday evening, spilling all 10 people out.
Luckily the out of control boat circling at 30mph was brought under control.
A court date for Effinger has not been set. She could have her drivers license suspended. Boating while intoxicated falls under the statute of an operating under the influence citation. Other charges are possible depending on the further investigation.
One of the people on the boat suffered a skull fracture, another suffered what officers describe as a partial lower arm amputation. Both were flown to Parkview Health in Fort Wayne and remain in serious condition. Two others with less serious injures were taken to Cameron Memorial Hospital. The others were brought to shore by local citizens with injuries not described.
The boat did cause damage to two decks. Effinger may have to pay for those damages as the insurance gets sorted out. The circumstances leading up to the incident are still being investigated.
DNR officers and other agencies who responded to the scene say locals did a good job at removing their docked boats to avoid any further damages that could have occurred.
