The American Red Cross is putting out the call. They need blood donors, and they need them right away.
The Red Cross says there is a critical blood shortage right now so they're putting out the emergency call for donors to roll up their sleeves and help out. Only about 3 percent of the U.S. population donates blood to begin with, and over the past few months the Red Cross is 61,000 donations short.
So, if you are considering helping out, now is the time.
New blood donors are especially needed during the summer months. Current donors often delay giving due to vacation and travel plans. Also school blood drives can't add to the supply while on students are summer break.
"We have 700 less blood drive operations scheduled and that's through-out the community so we usually rely on our community schools, people are out on vacation they are less likely to host a blood drive this summer also on top of that schools aren't in session so we aren't going to regular operations at high schools and colleges," Alexandra Cole, District Manager for the Red Cross said.
If you'd like to help out, you can head to the Fort Wayne Donation Center. That's located right across from the Coliseum on California road. You can schedule an appointment or just walk right in. This weekend, they will be open from 6:30 am to 2 p.m.
