Demolition crews are expected to take down the former Sports and Spirits bar sometime this week.
The removal of the building follows the purchase of the property by Deister Machine Co., which plans to leave that corner of North Anthony Boulevard and East Wayne Street as open space.
The bar has been closed since September 2016, when the owner relinquished his liquor license after three people were killed in a shooting incident at the bar.
ABC21 previously reported the demise of the establishment, with its checkered past, was something Fort Wayne police believed was long overdue. FWPD provided us in September with ten pages worth of calls for service at Sports and Spirits dating back to January 2006.
The records included reports of a dozen shootings, seven cuttings or stabbings and 28 times when police were summoned to deal with a fight at the bar.
A representative from Deister said the company intends to put in landscaping to give the land a park-like setting. The 107-year-old machinery manufacturer is located nearby, in the 1900 block of East Wayne Street.
