Three cats are dead after a house fire Monday morning.
The fire happened in the 300 block of Elizabeth Street. Firefighters were called to the scene around 10:48. When fire crews arrived, they found moderate fire on the first floor and had it under control in about 10 minutes, preventing the spread into another apartment on the second floor.
Officials say there were three apartment units in the home. As of the time of this report, the cause of the fire remains under investigation but early reports suggest the fire started in the kitchen of one of the apartments. The residents were home at the time of the fire but no one was injured. Three cats were reported dead due to smoke inhalation.
The fire department was assisted at the scene by TRAA, Fort Wayne Police Department, AEP, NIPSCO and Animal Care and Control.
