FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA 21) -

Negotiations are underway for a potential buyout of Lutheran Health Network.

A group of city councilmen and doctors met Friday to discuss what the potential buyout could mean for the city of Fort Wayne. This comes after a large group of Lutheran Medical staff met Thursday night to talk about the proposed buyout. City councilman John Crawford expressed his support Friday for the buyout. He believes it would bring more economic development and capital investment into Fort Wayne.

"There's no good reason that Fort Wayne wants that sucked out of Fort Wayne to support a failing system that is losing money everywhere else," Crawford said. "So for Fort Wayne, it is a no-brainer that this buyout would be better."

Dr. Crawford was joined by Lutheran Medical staff, local doctors, and fellow community members in the belief that this buyout would be in everyone's best interest.

The network announced recently it planned to invest $500 million over the next several years. It is not clear if the investment will continue if the buyout happens.
