RICHMOND, Ind. (AP) - Richmond officials say work to clean up and demolish the city's abandoned former hospital complex could start in early January. City Council members have given preliminary approval to proposed ordinances that would allow the city to accept state loans toward work on the former Reid Hospital property. The building has gone unused since the hospital moved to a new campus in 2008.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Several police organizations are arguing against a proposal that would have Indiana join a dozen other states that don't require a license to carry a handgun in public. A legislative committee met Tuesday about the proposal that has failed the last two years in the Republican-dominated Legislature. State police say about 3,000 people a year are denied permits because of criminal history or mental health issues.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A college professor in northeast Indiana is collecting solar eclipse glasses in preparation for the total solar eclipse in 2024. Christer Watson is a physics professor and observatory director at Manchester University. Watson tells The Journal Gazette that Fort Wayne will be on the edge of totality for an April 2024 total solar eclipse that will cross Indiana. Watson is collecting unwanted pairs of glasses and plans to distribute them for free in the future.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The city of Indianapolis will retrofit more than 27,000 city street lights with energy-efficient LED technology and use the savings add 4,000 new street lights in the coming years. Mayor Joe Hogsett joined Indianapolis Power & Light Co. to announce the improvements Wednesday. Hogsett issued an executive order last year ending the city's 35-year moratorium on new city street lights.
