INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Emails show USA Gymnastics in 2015 came up with false excuses to account for the absence of a sports doctor who had been accused of sexually assaulting female athletes. Larry Nassar suggested that USA Gymnastics tell people that he couldn't attend two major events because he was sick or needed to focus on his work at Michigan State University. The Indianapolis Star reported on the emails Thursday.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Convenience stores have found a way to offer cold beer to Indiana residents: by selling reusable bags that will chill beer and other beverages in 15 minutes. The announcement on Thursday, ahead of the Memorial Day weekend, was the latest attempt by the Indiana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores Association to combat liquor stores' exclusive right to sell cold carry-out beer in Indiana.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana remains under a statewide ozone advisory due to lingering poor air quality ahead of the long Memorial Day weekend. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management on Thursday extended its ozone advisory for all of the state into Friday. Ozone advisories are issued when ground-level ozone levels are forecast to be high and likely to cause coughing and breathing difficulties in elderly people, children and people with heart or lung conditions.

DANVILLE, Ind. (AP) - The former operator of a suburban Indianapolis in-home day care has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after a 16-month-old girl in her care died. Forty-five-year-old Melanie Messer of Plainfield learned her punishment Thursday in Hendricks Superior Court after pleading guilty to aggravated battery in the death of Andi Arnett. The child was found unresponsive at Messer's home on Aug. 8, 2016, and died three days later.
